Many contributors to tally
While John Hanson has proved himself a most Impressive spearhead this winter for Christchurch Brother United, one of the most heartening features of the Rothmans Soccer League campaign is the number of players to have contributed goals. Only three regular players, including the goal-keeper, Alan Stroud, have failed to score in the team’s tally of 23 goals from 12 matches. The other two are the veteran sweeper, Bobby Almond, and the young central defender, Gary Lund. The other three regu-
lar defenders, Paul Hillis, Ceri Evans and Kevin Calder, have all scored a goal, and in each case the goal has been worth points for United. The midfielders, Keith Braithwaite, Graeme Archer and Chris Riley, have chimed in; Johan Verweij scored in each of the first three league matches; and Brent Berry picked up one in the opening game against DB Wellington. Pleasing though Hanson’s form has been, his tally is half that of the outstanding goal-scorer, Greg Brown. The burly National Mutual Miramar striker needs
another nine goals to beat the league’s record. Brown has failed to score in only two of Miramar’s matches this winter. Regardless of whether Brown sets a new mark, the 22 goals of lain Ormond, for Blockhouse Bay in 1972, will always remain an outstanding achievement. Those were the days of an 18-match league, Blockhouse failed to score in two of its matches and Ormond scored at least once in every other game. Leading scorers.— 14: Greg Brown (Miramar);
10: Andy Deely (Gisborne); Nine: Neal Cave (Wellington), Jack Winters (C.F.U.); Eight: Mark Weddle (Dunedin City); Seven: John Hanson (Christchurch United), Mike McGarry (Dunedin City); Six: David Chote (Miramar), Malcolm Dunford (Wellington); Five: Graham Marshall (Dunedin City), Terry Emms (North Shore), Stuart Dunbar (Nelson), Alister Elder (University), Greg Fleming (Wellington).
