New company to help Kiwi tannery

PA New Plymouth The president of the New Zealand Maori Council, Sir Graham Latimer, will head a new company being formed to help Stratford-based Kiwi Tanneries, Ltd, out of financial difficulty. Details of the formation of the new company were released yesterday. The manager of Kiwi, Mr Tom Costello, and company secretary, Mr Cliff Capper, said the company would have its headquarters in Stratford. Sir Graham discussed the venture at a special meeting with directors in Stratford. He will chair the board

of directors of the new company, Wool and Sheepskin Products (1986), Ltd. Sir Graham said he was excited about the venture. It would bring together his Northland interests, set up under the umbrella of Otamatea Maori Trust Board nt Maungaturoto, with Kiwi interests in Taranaki. The Northland company also manufactures wool products. The new company’s capital would be equally shared between the parties.

It would buy sheepskins for Kiwi to process and be marketed through the trade and through the new company’s outlets at Auckland, Rotorua, Levin, Wellington and other centres. Wool and Sheepskin Products has about 30 different products. Market growth would determine how those lines were developed, Sir Graham said. Kiwi Tanneries, Ltd, has been fighting for survival for a number of years.
