Photos exposed
Almost everything you ever wanted to know about photography will be revealed in a series of photographic exhibitions and lectures in Dunedin this month. Called "Photographs 86,” it has been organised by the Otago Polytechnic School of Art It will be one of the most comprehensive exhibitions staged in Dunedin. It will have 27 exhibitions at 25 venues, three workshops, five public lectures, audio visuals, a photographic contest and a special display of re-cently-imported books about photography. Three ideas lie behind “Photographs 86.” One is to interest and educate the public about photographs as a form of selfexpression. Others are to broaden the understanding of different photographic approaches among photographers, and to stimulate interest in collecting photographs as rewarding and affordable works of art. Public and private historical and contemporary collections will be displayed and many works will be for sale during the exhibitions. No restrictions have been drawn about entries to the exhibitions, so “Photographs 86” has work from expressive photographers, photographic societies and camera clubs, the Professional Photographers’ Association, art societies, student groups including a
high school, and historical works. Some Christchurch and ex-Christchurch and Canterbury A photographers’ work will be exhibited. A former Christchurch photographer, Laurence Aberhart, will have works at the Bosshard Gallery from July 8 to July 25. An ex-“Ashburton Guardian” newspaper photographer, Nigel Yates, will be one of 25 contemporary photographers exhibiting at the Carnegie Centre from July 11 to 23. Yates will also have an exhibition, “Stage Photographs,” ol photographs taken while working for theatres, at the Fortune Theatre, from July 18 to 31. Christchurch photographer John Hawkhead will exhibit with Tony Nichol and Leah Poulter at the Moray Gallery from July 7 to 25. Keith Nicolson, also of Christchurch, will have an exhibition of nudes called “Torsos” at the Profile Gallery from July 11 to 27. A workshop on portrait photography will be given by a Christchurch photographer, Dick Poole, on July 5 at the Otago Museum. The photographic contest is for the public and will present an opportunity for keen beginners to take part in “Photographs 86.” People wanting more information about “Photographs 86” should contact the Otago Polytechnic’s School of Music.
