Black Arrow for Pankhurst in Farewell

By

J. J. BOYLE

The Wingatui jockey, Jim Pankhurst, will ride Black Arrow in the race that bears his name at the Ashburton winter meeting tomorrow. It will be Pankhurst’s last day of race riding at Ashburton, and the club has named its feature flat race the Jim Pankhurst Farewell. The Pankhurst Farewell Handicap is the T.A.B. trifecta event and first leg of the T.A.B. double. It will be Black Arrow’s first race since December, also his first from the Riccarton stable of Garth Jackson. Until recently, the four-year-old raced from the stable of Ron McCann and Pam Robson. McCann’s mount in the Pankhurst Farewell will be Reingard, which has not raced since he was campaigned in Australia in the spring. In his winding-up gallop for tomorrow’s race on the No. 1 grass at Riccarton yesterday Reingard ran 800 m in 50.65, and did his work well in the hands of Linda Mills. Noble Note and Donizetti, which will represent the John Bourne

stable in the Pankhurst Farewell, finished their 800 m on terms in 495. Buffy Beaufort had Our Rob as a companion while running 800 m in 49.6. Buffy Beaufort, a battling fifth at Oamaru last Monday, will be ridden tomorrow by John Dowling, who partnered Blyme to win the Oamaru race. Lance O’Sullivan, who rode Buffy Beaufort at Oamaru, has been engaged for Famillion tomorrow. Saddleman and Gold

Town wound up for their engagements in minor races at Ashburton by sprinting 600 m in 36.4 s yesterday. Saddleman was a fair sixth at Oamaru, and could go closer in the Burnetts Handicap. Gold Town is one of two members of the Garth Jackson team in the Methven Hotel Maiden, but Signum ricked a joint at the week-end, and is not a certain starter. Extra Bright and Macho Man, runners for Joe Shaw’s stable at Ashburton, returned 49.4 for their 800 m. Early selections for Ashburton: 1 11.05: Tiger Bow, Dundas, Our Guard. 2 11.35: The Mean Machine, Blue Corvette, Bijou Lady. 3 12.05: Real Pronto, Star of Travolta, Rakau Tiffany. 4 12.35: Kokoiass, Rome, Britzka. 5 1.05: Proud Leigh, Seafarer, Silver Bayou. 6 1.40: Tirana, Jonny Alone, Reingard. 7 2.10: Norwester, La
