Top Czech slumps in upset

NZPA-Reuter Eastbourne Hana Mandlikova slumped to a shock third round defeat in the women’s grass court tennis tournament at Eastbourne, England yesterday, beaten, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 by Robin White of the United States. The Czech, seeded to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals, started confidently but was increasingly hampered by poor serving. At 5-5 in the second set, White, ranked twentyfourth in the world, won two games in a row to take the set, then hurried into a 4-2 lead in the decider. She dropped her service in the next game, but took the following two for the best win of her career. White, aged 22, from California, was modest about her win. “Hana didn’t serve too well, but I guess the win won’t do any harm to my confidence with Wimbledon coming up,” she said. The top seed, Martina Navratilova, had no difficulty with her third round match, beating Dianne Balestrat of Australia 6-4 6-2.
