Prudential’s ‘man’

Sir,—Frances Adank (June 14) is wrong when she finds “the Prudential advertisement archaic and ridiculous ...” Mr Boyd Klap gave an excellent reply and explained the traditional thinking behind Prudential’s advertising. The Ford Motor Company has used the same badge on its cars since its inception — no need for change. Frances Adank would do well to remember that the symbol for justice is a woman. She is Themis, second wife of Zeus, and this symbol has been round a long time. Does Frances Adank believe that Themis has been used too long as a symbol for justice? Or do we have to put a blindfold on the “Man from Prudential” to even things up a bit? — Yours, etc., JOHN BATEMAN. Ahaura, June 16, 1986.
