Housing Corp bill ‘sensible’
PA Wellington Legislation allowing the Housing Corporation to provide a conveyancing service for its clients was a straightforward and sensible proposal, the Consumer Council said. In a submission to Parliament’s Social Services Select Committee, the council said the Housing Corporation Amendment Bill was a “timely prompt” to members of the legal profession. “Direct pricing competition from the Housing Corporation should encourage those lawyers who are still quoting at the higher end of the range to look carefully at their fee-setting structure,” the council said. It was entirely appropriate for the Government to move to help Housing Corporation borrowers complete house purchases. But the council said that nothing in the bill would compel corporation borrowers to use the corporation’s conveyancing service.
