Restorers ruining frescoes — sculptor
NZPA-AFP Rome The Italian sculptor, Venanzio Crocetti, has charged that restorers are “destroying” Michel angelo’s frescoes in the Sistine Chapel, among the world’s great art treasures, and has called on the Pope to intervene. The restoration work has revealed the brilliant original colours of the frescoes, painted between 1508 and 1541, but Mr Crocetti has said the chemicals used have des-
troyed final touches added by Michelangelo after the paint was dry. “To the layman the frescoes appear cleaner and the colours brighter, but in my opinion they have lost their real value as a work of art,” said Mr Crocetti. He called on Pope John Paul II to create an international commission to oversee the work, which began in 1980 and will go on until the final fresco, the Last Judgment, is cleaned in IM2.
