Reagan ambassador warns Mugabe
NZPA-AAP Canberra One of Ronald Reagan’s most senior diplomats has warned the Zimbabwean Prime Minister, Mr Robert Mugabe, to think again about his proposal to form a pan-African military force against South Africa. Lieutenant-General Vernon Walters, the Cabinet-
ranking United States Ambassador to the United Nations, said Washington was totally opposed to any violent solution to the problem in South Africa.
“I think Mr Mugabe would be well advised if he did not attempt a military solution to this problem,” General Walters said yesterday.
Mr Mugabe plans to take the proposal for a pan-African force to a meeting of the Organisation of African Unity in Addis Ababa, Ethiopa, next month. Mr Mugabe said on Monday that he did not think South Africa could defeat an African military force that was well armed.
