Sartorially snookered
NZPA Sydney Australia’s sartorial Treasurer, Mr Paul Keating, has been buttonholed in Brisbane over the Government’s new “Buy Australian” campaign aimed at helping Australia overcome its balance of payments problems. Mr Keating was in Brisbane to address the local Labour Party on the Government’s economic policies, and explained to a news conference that he had no doubt people would buy Australian if they were aware that local goods were competitively priced and as good as others. Having finished his address, the as-usual immaculately groomed Treasurer was asked if his elegant grey doublebreasted suit was Aus-ralian-made. After a slight pause, he confessed that it was not. He was quick to add that he did have Austra-lian-made suits, but did not know how many — “I’ll have to check the labels,” he said. Mr Keating also promised that he would buy Australian-made suits ... if the quality was there.
