‘Nicky' to clear the air
“Nicky," a 7m, nicotinestained hand, will arrive in Christchurch’s Cathedral Square today to remind smokers that the Great New Zealand Smoke-free Week is almost here. The massive hand will be welcomed to the city at 12.45 p.m. by the week’s national programme director, Mr Laurie Dee, the Mayor of Christchurch, Sir Hamish Hay, and the Wizard. It will then be handed over to the week’s official sponsor in Christchurch, Linwood City shopping mall, where it will be displayed until Friday. the smoke-free week will start on June 29. It aims to encourage smokers to break the habit, encourage children never to start, and educate as many people as possible about the dangers of smoking. The national campaign has the support of the Heart Foundation, Cancer Society, Asthma Society, Medical Association, and Health and Education departments. It has received $640,000 in grants.
