Black Thread appeals at Hawera today

Special correspondent New Plymouth Black Thread should make amends for his weak effort at Hawera last month when he races on his home track today. The four-year-old gelding is to contest the Farmers Co-op 1600, the first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Egmont Racing Club’s meeting.

The field for the 1600 m event is strong and there are many chances. However, horses trained on the track do look to hold the key to the outcome.

Black thread is an up-and-comer which has gone quickly through the grades this season. He won at New Plymouth last August, then raced consistently before winning at Awapuni last month. A big run was expected from Black Thread at Hawera on May 21. However, he got too far back and ran on late without a chance. It is doubtful that Black Thread will get so far off the pace today and he could provide Lance O’Sullivan with another

victory in his best-ever season tally. Other Hawera-trained representatives in Hilo Bay and Noble Bay could prove the hardest for Black Thread to beat. Hilo Bay returned a mighty effort to win at Wanganui on June 2 and on that run alone she warrants strong support. Noble Bay has had a time to freshen since he last raced and could need the run. However, he is too smart to discard lightly.

Diamond Raider has been racing below his best but his trainer, Margaret Bull, seldom trips north from Palmerston North without landing a major prize. Botting and Harbour Dee are leading lightweight fancies along with Just A Star. Just A Star has a powerful finish and has been running bold races of late.

In the second leg, The Hawera Sprint, Nitty Gritty should follow up solid form at the recent Wanganui meeting with a win on his home track.

The five-year-old gelding has had only three outings from Don Couchman’s stable and has raced well each time. A Stratford trainer, Dick Bothwell, will be represented by Fortune Road, Triscadec and Love A Handle. All three are major hopes. .

Kloosterman is overdue for a win. He has been second in his last three races and has an excellent record on the Hawera track.
