Reckless dies
NZPA Sydney Reckless, the stayer his trainer, the former Tommy Woodcock, rated as his closest galloper to the legendary Phar Lap, has died of a brain tumour, in spite of an operation to save his life. Woodcock, strapper to Phar Lap and one of the heroes of that great galloper’s story, trained Reckless to be one of Australia’s favourite stayers in the mid-19705.
Reckless took more than 30 starts to win his first race, then went on under Woodcock’s tutelage to become one of the best stayers in the
country. In 1977 he became the only horse to win the Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane cups in the same year and all but pulled off a fairytale in the fourth and greatest marathon of them all when second to Gold And Black in the Melbourne Cup. His last race was New Year’s Day, 1978, when he finished third in the Perth Cup. Reckless was put down on Thursday at the Macroom Lodge Stud near Warnambool, south-west of Melbourne, where he had been standing for the last 12 months.
