AUSTRALIA Markets continue slide

NZPA-AAP Sydney Australian sharemarkets continued their slide and closed easier across the boards, dragged down by a weakening industrial sector and profit-taking among gold stocks. Near the close, the all ordinaries index had eased 11.9 to 1197.2 and the all industrial index 15.0 to 1904.6. The all resources slipped 9.6 to 661.2 and the gold index plummeted 33.4 points to 915.8. National turnover was 63.5 million shares worth sAust97.sM, with falls outnumbering rises 363 to 154. BHP went against the trend, reaching a day’s high of 896 c before profit takers trimmed it back to a 2c gain at 888 by the close. Substantial BHP shareholder, Elders IXL slumped 22c to 448. Fears of continuing high interest rates and nervousness over the economy saw industrial stocks ease with retailer, Coles Myer and FAI each losing 14c to 530 and 790 respectively.
