Chch host to Haig dressage event

The Canterbury Area’s dressage committee will hold the International Haig Competitions in Christchurch, at the A and P Show Grounds in Addington on Labour Day, October 27.

The competition was the brainchild of the president of the international equestrian body, the Duke of Edinburgh, and Mr Michael Henderson, the chairman of the Scotch whisky company, John Haig and Co. Ltd, of England. It was devised to enable horses and riders around the world to compete against one another without the expense of long- distance travel. The Haig Company is responsible for the international travelling expenses of the judges between the countries of the participating groups. The world is divided into four groups, South America and South Africa (group one); South and Central America (group two); Australasia (group three): and Asia (group four). The tests in each section are chosen according to the general standard of its respective participants. In the case of group three (which includes New Zealand), competitors will all ride the Prix St Georges test. The Haig Supplementary Competition is open to upand- coming combinations, riding a test of medium grade standard. It is expected that there will be 12 combinations selected in each competition. Combined with this event, it is planned to hold the-South Island dressage championships in Hagley Park on October 24 and 25. A judges’ seminar is planned for October 26, possibly embracing the visiting international judges. Over the next few months, there will be coverage in this column of all entrants selected to take part in the

Trusteebank Canterbury will sponsor the second InterSchools’ One Day horse trials at Riccarton Racecourse on June 29. This year, 24 schools have entered 31 teams. A ballot was necessary to reduce this number to 26. The New Zealand Horse Society’s two-day horse trials course has been modified and shortened by Mrs Mavis Harris, from Weedons, for this event. Teams will be disqualified if a competitor shows the horse the jumps before competition day. • * * Sarah Hom, a member of the Cheviot Pony Club, passed her B Certificate last week-end in Christchurch. ♦ * * The Christchurch Hunt

scored a notable victory at the national Hound Show held near Invercargill recently. As part of the Birchwood Hunt centennial, the show attracted large entries. Christchurch’s Bridget won the title of national champion hound as well as South Island champion bitch. She also won her open bitch class (over 21 inches). Her brother, Baffler, won the open dog class (over 21 inches) and, together, they won best couple award. The huntsman, Dave Ferriman, did well in his presentation of these top hounds from the pack. There are ll‘/ 2 couples in the pack, which are hunted most Tuesdays and Saturdays. This season has produced excellent ground conditions, and all the country appears, in good heart. Hares have been plentiful, with the pack recording a good average. The meets during the May school holidays were well patronised, a feature being the well-sparred fences to encourage the youngest and greenest horses and riders. As it heads into June with snow on the tops and a keen bite in the air, the hunt looks forward to many more fine runs. Hounds have been working extremely well this season. * * * The Balmoral Pony Club held its Introductory and Novice One-Day horse trials at Mr and Mrs J. A. and A. A.
