Surrey tied up in Notts by Hadlee

NZPA-Reuter London The New Zealand medium-pace bowler, Richard Hadlee, took Nottinghamshire to a fine innings and seven runs win over Surrey in its county championship match yesterday. Hadlee finished with match figures of 10 for 72 on a Trent Bridge wicket which the Surrey captain, Pat Pocock, described afterwards as “unsatisfactory for first-class cricket.” Surrey, beaten inside

two days, were shot out inside 36 overs for 95 in the morning session and fared little better in their second innings, running up 192 thanks only to a sixth wicket stand of 76 by Trevor Jesty (55) and Andy Needham (48). Kent was forced to follow on 207 behind against Somerset after Joel Garner took four for nothing in 38 deliveries, reducing Kent from a healthy 140 for two to 226 all out. Worcestershire avoided

a follow-on when the Kenyan all-rounder, Dipak Patel, hit 94, including a six and 10 fours, against Lancashire. Worcestershire was all out for 253 after centuries from Neil Fairbrother (131) and John Abrahams (100 not out) had taken Lancashire to 367 for four declared. England’s new captain, Mike Gattlng, still seeking his first 50 of the season, made only 29 as Middlesex was dismissed for 173 in 57 overs by Yorkshire at Lords.
