Clearer signals with new mast
Communications for rescues on Lyttelton Harbour will be improved when an 18metre radio mast is erected at Naval Point by the Canterbury Coastguard. The mast will mean clearer signals on minor channels will be transmitted. Work on the mast will begin when renovations and painting of the coastguard’s building at Naval Point are* finished during the next few months. The building is expected to be officially opened on November 23, during a day of displays and demonstrations. Training sessions are being held twice a month during the winter. Boat crews are trained in new techniques, seamanship and using radios. The coastguard has about 100 members. ARRIVALS Spirit of Competition (7 a.m.), 1600, Wellington (Pacifica).
