Clean produce
Sir,—ln reply to J. Schager (May 28) I am aware of alternative methods for killing insects on fruit and vegetables. Unfortunately, they do not give the level of control required by our export markets and do not control fungi. The presence of insects or fungi, dead or alive, on foodstuffs is not visually acceptable to many people, especially our export market consumers. Pesticides, used correctly, do an
excellent job without hazard. Ironically, the alternate method guaranteed to kill all pests,, and very likely to be accepted in due course by major export markets, is radiation (June 12). — Yours, etc.,
ALAN UPRITCHARD. June 12, 1986.
