Working for dole
Sir, —Why can New Zealand not adopt a policy, as in some states of America and at present being introduced in Australia, where all unemployed people have to work for their dole cheques? Why should students be allowed to go straight from school on to the dole without ever working for their living? A scheme should be introduced here where it is compulsory for all unemployed to do some type of work in the community before receiving any benefit. Surely this would make them better allround contributors to our society. The argument that they are better to be on the dole than to accept any dead-end job is ridiculous. Who would you rather employ — persons wishing to leave dead-end jobs to better themselves or those who are unemployed?—Yours, etc.,
L. LAUDER. June 13, 1986.
