Tourism funding
Sir,—With respect to Mr D. Watson of the Promotion Council: although his written replies of May 24 and 30 have been oj interest he still has not answered my original question, “Why should the ratepayer be asked to fund commercial promotion?” One does not wish to appear narrow or bloody-minded, but I doubt whether the majority of ratepayers would be commercially involved with tourism. As the Arts Centre of Christchurch (May 29), has through its own initiative been successful without financial support from metropolitan councils, I would like to know when the Canterbury Promotion Council will be able to say the same.—Yours, etc.,
STEPHEN WICKHAM. ' June 12, 1986.
