Temuka bull sale pleases
A pleasing demand for Hereford bulls for use as stud sires and an encouraging clearance of Beef Shorthorns were features of the South Island selected Hereford and Beef Shorthorn bull sale at Temuka last week. Thirty-eight Herefords averaged $1994 ($2758 last year) and 20 Beef Shorthorns averaged $1285. Vendors regarded the sale as satisfactory considering the economic downturn in the farming industry.
A Hereford from A. D. H. Scott, Coalgate, made the top price of $7500 and was bought by Mangatu Blocks, of Gisborne. Six Herefords were bought for use as stud sires. Mr Scott sold 12 Herefords for an average of $2840. His bulls filled the first three placings in the Hereford show before the sale and a bull from I. McKerchar was fourth. Other averages by Hereford breeders included: I. McKerchar (Cave), $1875 for eight
bulls; N. Girvan (Fairlie), $1416 for six; B. Chamberlain (Leeston), $1225 for four; and P. Grant (Timaru), $970 for three. Single sales were recorded by Beechcroft Stud (Southbridge) at $4OOO, H. P. McKerchar (Cave) at $2900, and G. Chamberlain (Leeston) at $lOOO. Twelve Herefords were passed. Beef Shorthorns attracted steady competition at $lOOO to $l5OO, with two bulls making $2OOO and $2400. The quality of the stock was
very good and nine bulls were passed. Beef Shorthorn averages included: P. R. Jebson (Sheffield), $1350 for six bulls; W. A. and J. A. Austin (Albury), $llOO for three; I. M. Phillips (Darfield), $lO7O for three; W. G. McKenzie and Sons (Duntroon), $1625 for four (including champion bull); and J. A. S. Leslie and Sons (Balclutha), $1350 for two. Single sales were made by Mrs M. A. Miller (Rangitata Island) at $9OO, and J. W. McKenzie (Kurow) at $9OO.
