School gets $4M grant
The main building at Christchurch Boys’ High School will be given a new lease of life with a Government grant of $4 million. The school’s board of governors was told last week that the Government had approved a redevelopment plan for the school which included strengthening the main block. In the mid-1970s it was suggested that the building would have to be demolished, because it was an earthquake risk. The suggestion was strongly opposed by old boys’ groups and the Historic Places Trust. The redevelopment will include a $1 million science block, and a refurbishment of other blocks, costing $1 million. The school’s principal, Mr lan Leggat, said staff were delighted that the main block would be retained.
