Accord on manning

PA Wellington The Railways Corporation says agreement has been reached on the train-manning dispute that stopped trains to Kawerau for the last two days. The corporation’s general manager, Mr Gordon Purdy, said that the Kawerau branch of the National Union of Railwaymen was inlsisting that members be paid for the period on strike.

“This is a principle the corporation cannot agree to” said Mr Purdy. The original dispute was over interpretation of a manning agreement reached with the Railways Corporation.

Two-man crews had been introduced in place of the three-man crews on log trains on the Kawerau-Murupara line. A Railways source said the “wrong second person” was used on a crew.
