False interview calls
Wellington reporter Someone has been impersonating a Statistics Department interviewer in telephone calls to Auckland companies seeking confidential information about their employees. The department has received reports of five firms being telephoned and asked questions about the number and type of staff they have.
An Assistant Government Statistician, Mr Garry Dickinson, said yesterday the impersonator had also asked in some cases about the race of employees.
Mr Dickinson said the department had no idea why the calls had been made.
