Box will tell on speeding drivers
By HUGH BARLOW NZPA staff correspondent London The days could be numbered for speeding drivers who run off the road, and then tell their insurance company they were merely toddling along. A British company is developing a tamper-proof “black box” accident recorder which would remove all doubts about how a driver had been behaving. By plugging in to the device, police would know the speed a car had been travelling, how fast it had cornered and how hard it had braked in the 10 minutes before an accident. The inventors say the device would not only help the police discover the causes of accidents, but could help prevent them because drivers would know their actions were open to scrutiny. A spokesman for the Coventry firm developing the device said the recorder would measure about 7cm by scm and would add about £l2 (about $3O) to the cost of a new car.
