More alterations for museum?

Restoration costs for the Canterbury Museum may rise if the museum’s building committee adopt two more alterations. An estimated cost of $1.4 million has been quoted for the programme, which will cover basic strengthening work and restoration of the museum’s older sections. One of the new proposals was to install a concrete floor instead of a wooden one, giving a stronger floor and the opportunity to install underfloor heating, said the museum’s director, Mr

Michael Trotter. The other was to give better access to paraplegics by lowering the floor level of the Helmore Room, which contains European fine art displays. This would bring it into line with the other floors throughout the museum. The cost of the proposals is not yet known but Mr Trotter said the building committee, which met yesterday to consider the proposals, had asked the museum architect to provide estimates. These were likely to be available within two or three weeks, he said.
