Sound work by Tarawera

Special correspondent Palmerston North Manawatu Steeplechase candidates Tarawera and Leather Boy, worked soundly at Woodville yesterday morning, as did Kerykeion, one of the favourites for the Manawatu Winter Handicap. Fast work took place in the middle of the course proper, which was soft. Tarawera finished a length ahead of Leather Boy ending 2000 m. They took Imin 23.7 s for the last 1200 m and 42.4 s for the final 600 m. Tarawera the winner of the Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase last season, has not previously contested the Manawatu event. He has, however, won the Melford Steeples three times. Tarawera may not be as seasoned as some for tomorrow’s test, but he has been kept up to the mark since winning at Foxton and should not be far away. Leather Boy which has consistent form in weaker class, is no forlorn hope either. Kerykeion galloped 1400 m and Just A Star 1000 m. Kerykeion caught up with his partner inside the 800 m and recorded Imin 20.4 s for the 1200 and 40.2 s for the last 600 m.

Kerykeion ran a fine race for fourth in the Cornwall last week and should be a big chance again tomorrow. Bridge Player and Garibaldi went 1200 m in Imin 24.7 s the last 600 m in 41.75. No rider has been engaged yet for Bridge Player in the Ngata Hurdles.

Mr Daniel worked over a round at a strong pace. He ran second to Folly Fox on the first day and is a lightweight chance in the Awapuni Hurdles. Aspro went 1200 m in Imin 24.6 s the last 600 m in 41.35. A member of Fred Pratt’s team, he starts in the Ngata Hurdles.

Wendy’s Talent took Imin 23.4 s for 1200 m, the last 600 m in 40.15. She is an improver in the Rongotea Maiden at Awapuni.
