Dreamy Guy has form to support Nelson prospects

By

G. K. YULE

Dreamy Guy, one of the most consistent performers in the slower classes in Canterbury in recent weeks, looks reasonably placed on 10m to advance to a C 5 assessment with victory in the Caltex Gold Cup at Richmond Park tomorrow.

The Nelson Club’s feature race on the first day of its winter meeting has attracted a sizeable field, but few of the runners have form of reasonable merit to their credit in the past few weeks, and certainly none of them can match the consistency of Dreamy Guy. A four-year-old gelding by Lumber Dream from Rosalie Morn, Dreamy Guy has shown marked improvement in the past few months. His last six starts have resulted in three wins and three divi-dend-bearing placings, the most recent of which was a splendid second to General Jones at Ashburton on June 2. Two days earlier he finished third

to Microscopic over 2400 m. Probably the hardest for Dreamy Guy to beat will be Lordic, which was desperately unlucky when sixth at Rangiora last week. He received a good run along the inner until the straight. From then on he failed to secure a run and he finished full of running. His best form has been shown over sprint and middle distances, but there is no reason why he should not manage 3100 m if the pace is not too testing. Art Mac Faber, third at Ashburton behind Horizon and behind Kiss and Coo at Rangiora, will also be in demand on a course on which his trainer-driver,

Michael de Filippi, has fashioned a splendid record. Art Mac Faber can sprint and stay and it will be surprising if he fails to win on the trip. Radiant King, Golden Mann and Embark appeal most of the horses on the front, while Kanturk, Sure He Can and Mark Seven are handicapped horses well capable of getting into the finish.

Young Countess will probably start favourite in the Trailways Inn Lion Brown Pace, the second leg of the double. Once again the field is an open one, with the chances of Timely Rule, Polita, Swift Hurricane, Hemihana, Island Miss and Vonnie’s Charm also highly rated.

Race 6 0 215 CALTEX GOLD CUP $6000; C 3; 3100 m. 1 0941 Embark IM. Rennie It Made pace and won well at Hutt Park on June 2. This will be harder, but must be considered just the same. 2 8600 Thornlea 2Jill Smolensk! it Broke badly and never in contention at Rangiora. Looks well and might not be a forlorn chance. 3 9733 Art Mac Faber 3M. de Filippi It Paced sound races at Ashburton and Rangiora for third placings. Most reliable and must be a leading chance. 4 2897 Radiant King 4S. Miller It Form rather mixed. Has gone reasonably at trials lately and good enough to beat most in this field. 5 8000 Dark Berry 5 •• • • « Weak form background. Others preferred. 6 Tumahu Hanover 6G. Dunn It First start since April, 1985. Speedy, but will have to be taken on trust. 7 6700 Watbro Kilt 71. Schwamm It First start since February 22. Form mixed this season and hard to recommend. 8 1480 Golden Mann 8 •- J- Hay It Failed to run on at either Ashburton or Rangiora. Before that went well enough to be considered as an upset chance. 9 0000 Nordel King 9A. Butt It No appeal on showing at Rangiora. Amy Bock 10 ... C. de Filippi it

Just a fair effort at Rangiora last week. Improvement needed. 11 4726 Lordic 11 R. Brosnan It Never in the clear at Rangiora last week. Racing well and overdue for a win. Might be tested by the distance. 12 1132 Dreamy Guy 1 K. Townley 10 Good second to General Jones at Ashburton on June 2. Racing generously and consistently and looks the probable winner. 13 0 Kanturk 2 L. O'Reilly 10 Made a fresh start on April 19 at Forbury, but was not in contention. Speedy, but will have to be taken on trust. 14 2005 Sure He Can 1 I. Cameron 20 Failed badly at Ashburton, but went a little better when fifth at Rangiora last week. Not consistent, but too good to leave out. 15 3092 Mark Seven 2 M. Smolensk! 20 Game finish for second to Gentle Sir at Rangiora last week. Not impressive at Ashburton before that. Sound stayer not out of this.

Race 8 D 3.15 TRAILWAYS INN LION BROWN PACE $4000; C2; 2200 m. 1 0796 Hemihana IJ. Hay It Only a fair run when sixth at Ashburton on June 2. Speedy, but not too consistent. 2 0010 Vonnie'a Charm 2 ... C. de Filippi It Broke early at Rangiora and never near lead. Better drawn this time. 3 0090 Danum Lady 3 T. Butt It Disappointing in latest starts, most recent of which was on March 29. Hard to recommend. 4 4603 Polita 4G. Hill It First start since March 1. Goes well when fresh and will appreciate the sprint journey. 6 2450 Timely Rule 6W. Forsyth It First start since she lost driver at Addington on March 29. Has shown sound form at times and could be one of the better chances. 7 0004 Swift Hurricane 7J. Hislop It Helped by dead track when fourth at Rangiora last Saturday. Not without a chance of surprising. 8 7009 Delwyn Las* BA. Neal It Form background mixed. Hard to consider. 9 6065 Island Miss 91. Cameron It Fair efforts at Hutt Park earlier in the month. Could beat most in this race. 10 70 Sir Arden 10G. Thompson It First start since December and will have to be taken on trust. 11 5461 Young Countess 11 . . . R. Brosnan It Broke through for an overdue win at Rangiora last week. Rise in class should not stop her making another bold bid. 13 0690 Chummy 13M. de Filippi it Stopped badly at Rangiora. Big improvement needed. 14 1177 Idle Thoughts 14 .... M. Edmonds It Fair run when seventh at Addington on March 29. Has gone well lately at trials. Must be respected. 15 3170 Friendly Lord 15L. O’Reilly It Showed much potential earlier in the season. Has had a chance to freshen and must be a leading chance. 16 0980 Miss Jenalda 16R. May It Hard to recommend on latest showings, particularly from this draw. 17 0 Bronze Tiger 17G. Dunn it Never in challenging position at Rangiora last week when making a fresh start. No appeal on that effort. 19 0790 Shipmade URM. Rennie it Much better than record might suggest. With average luck might not be far away. Emergency: Island Miss. Scratched: Bandstan, Nathan Tryax, Helios Adew. Race 9 3.50
