Board decision accepted

Wellington reporter The Minister of Transport, Mr Prebble, accepted yesterday the Marlborough Harbour Board’s decision not to resign but to carry through to the October local body elections. Mr Prebble said the legal advice he had

received was that the board was entitled to continue in office. The Government could replace it with a commissioner only under special legislation, an action that the board had indicated it would oppose and that would, in any event, prove time-consuming, Mr Prebble said.

“The issue is now really to be settled by the electors of Marlborough,” he said. He also noted with pleasure that the board had welcomed his decision to call in the Auditor-Gen-eral, saying he was confident the report could be prepared “quickly.” Further report, page 2.
