Some Linwood City shops strike snag
About six of the 48 shops in Linwood City will not open on Friday evenings from this week because of a legal hitch, but the other shops in the shopping centre will continue to be open on both Thursday and Friday evenings.
Workers under the retail (non-food) award can work only one late night a week.
A meeting of Linwood City retailers on Tuesday decided that the , centre would continue stay
open on both Thursday and Friday evenings. Supermarkets can trade on two late nights because their staff are under a different award, and smaller shops under the non-food award can also stay open, staffed by owners and managers. The Canterbury branch of the Shop Employees’ Union will prosecute retailers employing staff in non-food outlets on more than one late night a week.
