Wanganui claims victory
PA Wanganui Wanganui deservedly triumphed, 16-9, over Manawatu in yesterday’s annual rugby match between the two neighbouring unions. The victory gave Wanganui the Bruce Steele Cup for the first time in 100 years. Wanganui, ahead 6-0 at half-time and then 13-3 15 minutes into the second spell, had to withstand a Manawatu fightback in the closing stages before claiming victory. Wanganui enjoyed almost 70 per cent territorial advanperhaps one of
the weakest Manawatu XVs it has faced in the past dozen years.
Controversy erupted just two minutes into the second spell when the Manawatu coach, Graham, Hamer, sent the "rebel” AU Black, Gary Knight, on to the field 'when he lost the lock, Murray Rosenbrooke, through injury. Knight, recently back from a tour of South Africa with the Cavaliers, helped fire up the Manawatu forward effort but Wanganui replied with stout under seveip
