Youth dies of rugby injury
PA Hastings A Te Ante College sixthform, pupil has died after being injured in a rugby match at Hamilton last Saturday. He was i Walter George Konia,aged 17, of Hastings.'. The youth died in Waikato Hospital on Tuesday. He is believed to have suffered a brain haemorrhage after tackling an opposition player near the end of an annual match against a Church College side. Walter was the Te Aute First XV’s half-back. His elder brother, Edward, is a prop in the same team. A Te Aute senior master, Mr Wayne Rewcastle, said Walter Konia continued on playing after the tackle, but collapsed at the end of the match and was taken to hospital., “It was a freak accident. Walter apparently banged his head on an opposition player’s knee during the tackle,” said Mr Rewcastle.
