A.I.D.S. guide for barbers
NZPA-AAP Canberra The Australian A.I.D.S. Task Force has issued guidelines to barbers for the disinfecting of equipment. The guidelines to help prevent the transmission of A.LD.S. were issued just a few days after New Zealand’s acupuncturists decided to increase sixfold the time they sterilised their needles. The Australian task force suggested there was a low-level risk of transmission of the A.1.D.5.related virus through in adequately disinfected equipment in barbers’
shops and hairdressing salons. The guidelines said razors, scissors, combs, towels and clippers should not be used on a customer unless they had been washed in cold water with soap or a suitable detergent and dried with a clean cloth or towel, then soaked in a disinfectant such as 70 per cent alcohol or methylated spirits, and rinsed and dried. Ultraviolet cabinets were satisfactory for storage but were not effective for disinfecting, the Task Force said.
