Good squash debut

Toni Bird made an Impressive debut for her new club, Christchurch, in the latest round of the Skellerup Sport Star women’s open grade inter-club squash competition on Tuesday evening. Bird, who has moved up from Ashburton, had a tough first match against Justine Marriott (Sumner), who is disputing the position of topranked Canterbury woman with Carolyn Viggers.

But Bird won the first two games, and actually held match ball at 8-4 in the third. She had three more match balls In that game before the unbeaten Marriott settled down and won in five games. That performance helped Christchurch II to win the over-all contest on a countback of games, 10 to nine. Only one point (129-128) separated the sides. One of Christchurch’s individual wins came from June Edwards, who survived a match ball in the fourth to beat Lorraine Sutherland. Mount Pleasant, now assured of winning the President’s Trophy donated for the first two competition rounds, had an easy win over Christchurch I. All the contests were decided in straight games.
