Sir,—Many eminent anthropologists accept that homo erectus “happened” one million years ago. One million, five, even ten, is insignificant in geological time. If “many” scientists accept Creation as a reasonable hypothesis, the semantic essence of “reasonable” has undergone a sudden traumatic change or those scientists now use blatant contradiction as a datum for serious discussion. The concept of an omniscient Creator repeatedly fashioning untold millions of living creatures, only to destroy them, is as ludicrous as the same deity using all geological processes for the sole purpose of the advent of man, on whose appearance geological upheavals should have ceased. Inhabiting eternity is one thing, creating the cruellest, most destructive creature ever, then calling him "beloved,” is quite another. Divine, biblical, theological or scientific beliefs, the greatest boo-boo of all is to equate ultimate authority with a fanaticism that negates the accumulated knowledge of the ages in favour of primitive myths.—Yours, etc., ARTHUR MAY.
