Live sheep exports

Sir,—The S.P.C.A. is to be congratulated on its firm opposition to live sheep shipments, in the face of criticism from certain quarters. Distress to sheep caused by the shipments is denied, despite ample proof to the contrary. Federated Farmers’ accusations of economic sabotage are also wide of the mark, warranting a reminder that the S.P.C.A. made a substantial donation to this body for stock food following the South Canterbury floods earlier this year. The assumption that animal cruelty is socially and legally acceptable as a means to financial gain conflicts with the S.P.C.A. ethos promoting a fair deal for all animals, irrespective of their human administrators’ interests.—Yours, etc.,
