Man who gave U.S. vodka dies

NZPA-AP Farmington, Connecticut John Martin, who introduced vodka to the American public, died yesterday of natural causes. He was 80.

Mr Martin was president of G. F. Heublein and Brothers, based in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1939 when the company acquired the rights to Smirnoff vodka.

Heublein promoted vodka as a mixer for cocktails, developing such drinks as the Moscow Mule, the Bloody Mary, the Screwdriver, and the Vodka Gimlet. Mr Martin was chairman of the company from 1961 until he retired in 1966.

Heublein was acquired by R. J. Reynolds Industries Incorporated in 1982.
