Teacher intake draws 70-plus

The mid-year intake of secondary teacher trainees at Christchurch Teachers’ College has drawn applications from more than 70 would-be teachers.

The Minister of Education, Mr Marshall, recently approved a midyear intake of between 15 and 20 for the college. Sixty of the seventy who applied are being interviewed.

The Education Department regional senior education officer, Mr Norman Sinclair, said there had been more than 100 inquiries about the midyear intake, but some persons did not formally apply because they were not properly qualified. Applications have been wide-ranging — from as far south as Queenstown, and as far north as Hastings — with many from the lower half of the North Island.

The major qualifications of those who applied are: technical, eight; chemistry, five; music, three; economics, two; home science, eight; mathematics, four; English, twelve; physics, one; geography, four; accounting, two; horticulture, one; languages, one; history, six; and biology, two.
