Chch man drowns

PA New Plymouth A Christchurch man drowned after a freak wave swamped a cabin boat off the Taranaki coast on Thursday evening, the police said yesterday. He was Noel Christopher Coxon, aged 26. The freak wave, estimated at four to five metres high, overturned the cabin

boat, carrying four people, on a reef about 800 m out to sea. The boat was from the Maui rock dumping vessel Seaway Sandpiper. Three of the occupants managed to swim ashore. Mr Coxon was last seen in the cabin. Constable Terry Corbett of the Opunake police said one man climbed a cliff after checking his

friends were safe and reached help at a farmhouse. The dead man was found about 8.30 p.m. on Thursday among rocks in the bay. He was lifted out by helicopter while the other men were taken to Taranaki Base Hospital by ambulance. They were examined and discharged.
