China enters T.V. arena

From GILLIAN WAINWRIGHT

China is about to make a spectacular entry on to the world television stage. At the Cannes television festival, recently, CCTV made itself known at a stand decorated with lanterns. Its director, Mr Hong Ming Sheng, said he wanted to make Chinese television a real partner with foreign television companies. “We are interested in every kind of contact.”

China’s main television partners now are Britain and Japan. It is a big programme producer, especially of animated cartoons, which are its speciality.

CCTV was trying to get world-wide TV network chiefs to buy series like “Pilgrimage to the West,” adapted from a popular classic novel and renowned for its costumes, and “Three States,” based on a novel set in ancient China. It also offered documentaries on Chinese cooking. China has three national networks broadcasting 27 hours of TV a day, with 300 regional stations broadcasting to more than 60 million television sets. Only 10 per cent of its programmes are bought from abroad.
