Winds fail to shake Baker

Michelle Baker, of Timaru, mastered torrid conditions on Lyttelton Harbour yesterday to win both her races in the Laser section of the national women’s yachting selection trials. The trials, sailed in conjunction with the national youth championships, struck their worst weather in the series so far, with 26 knot gusts convincing many crews to stay ashore. Baker’s fifth straight win has given her a perfect tally and a . huge ;lead over Rotorua’s Lisa Kibblewhite. Bruce Trotter f. continued with his winning form in the men’s section to open up a comfortable 17.7 point lead over fellow Aucklander, David Frearson. >

The top seeded Auckland 470 crew of Jon Bilger and Jarrod Kriletich were in their element. The pair raced away to win the third resail and finish with an over-all lead in the series of 6 points, discarding the worst race, to lead from fellow Aucklanders Wayne Avery and Ross Bannamn (18.7 points).
