African commission opens
PA Wellington The new High Commissioner in Africa, Mr Chris Laidlaw, will leave New Zealand to take up his new post in Harare later this month. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Lange, said the new high commission l in the Zimbabwean capital was now open.
It would handle New Zealand’s relations with Botswana, Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia as well as Zimbabwe, he said. Mr Laidlaw, a former All Black, will leave New Zealand to take up his post on May 22. He has been an adviser on foreign affairs to Mr Lange since late 1984. He was a foreign affairs staffer from 1971 to 1977 and a special assistant to the Commonwealth Secre-tary-General in London from 1978 until 1984.
The appointment fulfilled a 1984 election promise by the Labour Party to open at least one diplomatic post in Africa. The National party has criticised the appointment, saying it was unnecessary at this time and said the siting of the post would be reconsidered by a National Government.
