Reprieve for bus service

The Canterbury Education Board’s Windwhistle bus service for children travelling to the school has won a reprieve. Earlier this year, the board received a directive from the Education Department, saying that all bus services which were costing more than $5.90 a day a child, were to be cut. This is the amount of boarding allowance the Government pays for children at boarding schools.

At the time, it seemed that the Windwhistle service would have to be cut more than 40km to run within budget. This would have affected at least seven children. The board was told that yesterday by transferring some pupils from another nearby bus service, and the addition of two further eligible children, the service had been brought back to within the acceptable cost.
