M.P. pushes milk barrow

The member of Parliament for Sydenham, Mr Jim Anderton, joined about 150 Halswell residents in their call to retain home deliveries of milk, at a meeting last evening. A milk vendor in the area, Mr Doug Redmond, organised the meeting at which Mr Anderton promised to fight against changes that could threaten home deliveries.

Deregulation and the introduction of cartoned milk could confine milk sales to shops and supermarkets because deliveries could be made uneconomic through pricecutting, Mr Anderton said. This would disadvantage elderly or disabled people who could not get to shops easily, and take away an important social institution and social service.

The crowd strongly supported Mr Anderton’s pledge that he would fight any of his caucus colleagues who supported the introduction of cartoned milk. In spite of a move towards a freer economy, public concern about the threat to home deliveries could sway the vote which was expected to be taken within the next month, Mr • Anderton said.
