Union, and sees the move from trade union official to politician as a natural transition. “The trade union movement is waking up to the fact that it is at Government level that the decisions are made. The people who should be involved in making these decisions are trade union people themselves,” he said.
Mr Woods, aged 43, a poultry farmer, of Springfield, also seeks nomination in the Island Bay and Papatoetoe electorates, where Labour members are retiring.
He said he would be reluctant to stand against Mrs Batchelor if she were the only other candidate.
He said the Avon electorate deserved a choice of candidate and he believed he deserved the nomination because of his record of sacrifice for the party. Among these sacrifices was standing for a National-held seat such as Selwyn.
The two other candidates for the nomination are Mr Paul Piesse, secretary of the Canterbury Stores, Packing and Warehouse Union, and Mr Garth Lomax, an organiser with the Labourers’ Union. Mr Lomax is also a junior vice-president of the Labour Party.
