Trade with U.S.
Sir, —The relationship between the heading “N-stand a threat to trade with U.S. — envoy” (April 21) and the article is a bit like a mountain followed by a molehill. As Paul Cleveland says, “the U.S. has repeatedly said that It does not intend to impose economic sanctions.” New Zealand’s trade figures are high and American tourism’s up — not because of our notoriety (a negative term), as Mr Cleveland suggests, but because of our popularity. I have met hundreds of American tourists very supportive of our nuclear-free stand. A campaign now on in the United States promoting New Zealand produce is the sort of positive support we are getting from our American friends. Our produce is being promoted as high quality and grown in a nonpolluted environment. Our nuclear-free policy has given New Zealand produce a positive image world wide.—Yours, etc., JENNIFER LINEHAM.
