‘Free ride’ annoys passenger

NZPA staff correspondent Sydney An elderly New Zealander got a couple of swift lessons about airports and Australian humour when he passed through Sydney, according to a report yesterday. According to the “Sydney Morning Herald,” the unnamed passenger went for a stroll while in transit at the international terminal on his way from New Zealand to London last Friday. He found his way out on to the tarmac, but could not find an unlocked door to get back inside, while at the same time realising that time until his departure was running short. Finally he entered the baggage area and asked one of the baggage handlers how to get back up to his plane quickly. Apparently the advice was to walk up “that chute,” and a few second later a shaken and rather annoyed passenger was ejected from the top of one of the baggage carousels in the customs hall where he was pounced upon by incredulous customs officials. Because he was still clutching his transit card he was able to convince officials his tale was true. His escapade is meanwhile passing into airport folklore.
