Decision delayed

By

OLIVER RIDDELL

in Wellington A decision on whether to make public all the details of the preliminary inquiry hearings into the sinking of the Soviet cruise liner Mikhail Lermontov now awaits the return to New Zealand of the Minister of Transport, Mr Prebble. He had asked the Solici-tor-General for his advice on whether the full depositions into the sinking should be released.

Mr Prebble was still considering this advice when he left for an O.E.C.D. meeting in Paris, and his decision is still awaited. He had said that if any reasons had been given by Captain Don Jamieson in the preliminary inquiry for his decision to direct the fatal change of course of the Mikhail Lermontov they had not been disclosed in the report and neither had Captain Jamison given any public explanation.
