New Image launched

New Image rugby was launched with a flourish before an enraptured audience of 120 school teachers, representing 80 schools, at Rugby Park yesterday afternoon. The activity is a rugby response to the feeling that children deserve games suitable for them, and designed for them — not those patterned for adults. The format was demonstrated by a group of pupils of Chisnalwood Intermediate School, under the direction of Mr Jerry

Rowberry, of the Canterbury Rugby Union’s staff coaching group. A number of contributing schools intend to play New Image rugby this winter, rather than the traditional version. All schools represented at yesterday’s gathering were presented with a rugby ball to get the new activity rolling. “The big number of teachers who attended the demonstration indicated that the level of interest in New Image is high,” said Mr Dave Ching, of the CR.U.
