County debut threatened

NZPA staff correspondent London Selection in the New Zealand team has left a cloud over the future in county cricket of the new cap Brian Barrett. The 19-year-old fast bowler will this week find out whether the county side, Worcestershire, which has signed him on a one-year contract, wants him to start the season. His county selection will be disrupted when he joins the New Zealand team in June for its tour of England. Barrett, whose father is Irish, went to England on an Irish passport which allowed him to join Worcestershire as an English player, but his selection means he will now be

classified as an overseas player. He said it would “make things very hard — only the stars get in as overseas players.” “I hope they (Worcestershire) are not that sort of club, but there’s a strong bowling staff here and it’s not a rich county ... you never know.” Barrett, the only new cap in the New Zealand side, made an impressive Shell cricket debut for Auckland this year taking 11 wickets in his first three matches. He was the top wicket taker during the Young New Zealand tour of Australia with 35. Barrett said he was "very, very pleased” to learn of his selection on Sunday night.
